Units Spotlight 1…

Update #3

To show you where the journey is heading, I’d like to share a bit more information about the units in Red Horizon 41 – Revised Edition…

Until the launch of our campaign, Erich and I are delighted to give you a bit of insight into the world of the Assault System. To that end, we’ll be sharing detailed information about the game with you at regular intervals. The Units Spotlight is intended to focus specifically on the units in the new Red Horizon 41 – Revised Edition.

Today, we’re looking at a particularly exciting unit—one that can have a decisive impact on the course of the game right from the setup phase: the Soviet Cavalry Squad 41. Let’s take a closer look.

Historical Context – Operational Role:

Cavalry units offered the advantage of rapid deployment and required less logistical support than mechanized forces.

Their adaptability allowed them to move effectively through rough terrain where vehicles struggled. Soviet cavalry often conducted deep raids behind German lines, disrupting supply routes and communications. These operations forced the Wehrmacht to divert significant resources to counter their movements. In most cases, cavalry units were no longer committed to battle mounted as they had been before the war; instead, they used their mobility to cover ground and then fought dismounted.

Key Facts / Design Basis:

  • In Service: From 1930s onwards
  • Classification: Specialized infantry
  • Number of soldiers: 11 (1 cavalry commander, 10 soldiers)
  • Armament: 1x SVT-40 semi automatic rifle, 10x Mosin-Nagant rifle, Hand grenades
  • Tactical Notes: Comparable with other unit: Rifles 41
  • Strengths: Mounted Patrol ability
  • Weaknesses: poor combat values vs tank units

Special Ability:

We’ve translated this unit’s exceptional mobility into the game through a unit-specific special rule:

Mounted Patrol:Before all other units are set up at the start of the scenario, this unit can be placed up to four hexes outside of its own setup area/s. Ignore if drawn or chosen as a reinforcement. After the unit has been placed, the soldiers dismount from their horses.

This unit is then treated as an infantry unit for the rest of the game.

As a player, this already gives you a clear advantage before the game even begins—for example, by reducing the distance to a target hex, or by using this deployment method to set up a flanking manoeuvre.

We hope you enjoyed this brief overview. If so, stay tuned to discover which other units are included in this fantastic box.

Kind regards,

Wolfgang and Erich
