Community Spotlight: Assault on the Eastern Front – Now in 1/72 Miniatures

Update #7

Today, we’re delighted to share a community After Action Report demonstrating how seamlessly the system adapts to full tabletop miniatures — this time using 1/72 scale models.

Assault Leningrad – After Action Report (Miniatures Edition)

One of the great strengths of the Assault Tactical System has always been its flexibility. Today, we’re delighted to share a community After Action Report demonstrating how seamlessly the system adapts to full tabletop miniatures — this time using 1/72 scale models.

This particular battle recreates a brutal December 1941 Soviet counterattack on the outskirts of Leningrad.

Assault Leningrad – Miniatures After Action Report, Winter 1941

In December 1941, Soviet forces launched a counterattack to retake a suburb of Leningrad. Leading the assault were heavyKV-1andKV-2tanks. The German defenders, however, were well prepared — minefields covered the approaches, and dreaded 88mm guns waited in sandbagged emplacements.

The battle began dramatically as Soviet infantry attempted to cross what was believed to be a frozen river. Some units made it across with relatively light losses. Elsewhere, the ice gave way, and men were swept beneath the freezing water before their comrades could reach them.

Three Sectors – Three Very Different Outcomes

In the eastern sector,

the Soviet commander committed his KVs straight across the mined bridge. Thanks to favourable dice rolls, they found a safe path through the mines and began bombarding a factory building housing a German 37mm anti-tank gun.

Despite being outmatched by the heavy armour, the gun crew held off three successive infantry assaults under relentless KV-2 fire — earning rumours of Iron Cross nominations. Nevertheless, two Soviet tanks eventually fell victim to the feared 88s.

In the centre,

a newly appointed Soviet officer chose a more cautious approach, using armour to soften up forward buildings before advancing. Initial gains were promising, but when his infantry pushed across open ground they walked into a devastating L-shaped ambush involving a StuG, heavy machine guns and well-positioned German infantry.

The attack stalled, the minefields remained uncleared, and whispers spread of an uncomfortable discussion with the commissar.

In the western sector,

the Soviets successfully destroyed the 88 covering their bridge and cleared anti-tank mines — only to suffer heavy losses from cleverly positioned anti-personnel mines with chain explosions. Over the radio, the frustrated commander was heard shouting about an “Iron Maiden”, though whether this referred to a medieval torture device or simply the vicious minefield remains unclear.

By nightfall, several German positions had finally been overrun after determined resistance and heavy KV-2 bombardment. Casualties were significant on both sides — yet the enjoyment around the table was equally evident, with plenty of spirited banter accompanying the fierce fighting.

This dramatic engagement showcases just how dynamic and atmospheric the battle became, full of bold decisions, heroic last stands and costly miscalculations.
